This is the new MG HS Petrol!
Over the past decade, MG has undergone a remarkable transformation, rising from the ashes to become one of the most dynamic and fast-growing automotive brands in the UK. This comeback story is exemplified by the latest iteration of the MG HS Petrol, a stylish and practical SUV that combines affordability, advanced technology, and a touch of luxury. The HS has become MG's best-seller in the UK, and this new version comes just over a year after its last facelift, coinciding with MG's centenary.

Their focus on delivering quality, technologically advanced vehicles at competitive prices has been a key driver of its success. Today, MG is not just known for its legacy but also for being a modern, forward-thinking brand that offers great value for money.

The new MG HS Petrol builds on the success of its predecessor with subtle but impactful design updates. These refinements give the HS a more sophisticated and dynamic appearance, ensuring it continues to stand out in the crowded SUV segment.

The HS's front end features a refreshed grille design, now with a more intricate mesh pattern that gives the SUV a premium look. The grille is flanked by LED headlights that have been subtly reshaped for a sharper, more contemporary appearance. The integrated daytime running lights add to the SUV’s modern aesthetic and enhance visibility on the road.

The side profile of the HS retains its muscular and aerodynamic lines, but with a few enhancements that give it a sportier stance wheel. New alloy wheels which are now 19” across the range. The gently sloping roofline and pronounced wheel arches provide a sense of movement and strength, while the sleek chrome detailing around the windows adds a touch of elegance.

At the rear, the new HS features redesigned taillights with a more sophisticated LED pattern, improving both aesthetics and visibility. The dual exhaust tips and revised bumper design contribute to a sportier look, ensuring the HS looks just as impressive from behind as it does from the front.

Step inside, and MG continues to impress with a focus on comfort, space, and advanced technology. MG has made several updates to the interior to enhance the overall quality and user experience, ensuring it meets the needs of modern drivers and families.

The cabin layout is clean and driver-centric, with a large 12.3” virtual driver information display taking centre stage on the dashboard. The interface is intuitive and easy to use, offering access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration. Higher trim levels include integrated satellite navigation and a 6-speaker sound system that delivers an enhanced audio experience. In the Trophy, you get an 8 speaker sound system, and provides clear, customisable displays for all essential driving information, from speed and fuel levels to navigation directions and safety alerts. This digital setup not only adds to the modern feel of the cabin but also helps the driver stay focused and informed.

The seats in the new HS are designed for comfort, with ample padding and support for long journeys. The Trophy Trim offers leather upholstery for an extra touch of luxury, and the driver’s seat is 6-way power-adjustable to help find the perfect driving position. The front seats are also heated in the Trophy Trim, adding a layer of comfort during colder months. Without doubt, these were some of the comfiest car seats I’d ever experienced – driver or passenger.

When it comes to practicality, the MG HS Petrol doesn't disappoint. It offers a boot capacity of 507 litres, which expands to 1,484 litres when the rear seats are folded down. This makes it versatile enough to handle everything from the weekly shop to weekend getaways or even a bit of light DIY. The boot floor is flat and wide, making it easy to load and unload bulky items. Additional storage spaces throughout the cabin, including door pockets and a centre console bin, add to the HS’s practicality.
Engine Specifications

Power Output: The 1.5-litre GTDI petrol engine delivers 169 PS and 202 Nm of torque, offering a satisfying amount of power for everyday driving. It provides enough punch for confident overtaking and smooth acceleration.

Transmission Options: Buyers have the choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). The manual transmission offers a more engaging driving experience, while the DCT provides smooth and quick gear changes, enhancing comfort and performance.

Fuel Efficiency: The HS Petrol is designed with efficiency in mind, offering a combined fuel consumption figure of around 37.2 mpg for the manual variant and 36.2 mpg for the DCT variant (WLTP). These figures make the HS competitive in its class, though it's worth noting that some rivals may offer slightly better efficiency. We even got it up to mid fifties during our road trip.

The MG HS Petrol provides a comfortable and composed driving experience. The suspension is tuned to absorb road imperfections, ensuring a smooth ride even on rougher surfaces. The steering is light, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces, yet it offers enough feedback for a confident drive at higher speeds.

While the HS isn’t a performance SUV, it delivers a solid all-around driving experience that’s well-suited to the demands of daily motoring. It’s refined on the motorway and agile enough for city driving, with the turbocharged engine providing ample power when you need it.

Cons
Fuel Efficiency: While the HS Petrol's efficiency is competitive, it might not be the best in its class for those who prioritize fuel economy above all else.

No All-Wheel Drive Option: The HS is only available with front-wheel drive, which may be a limitation for those who need more traction for driving in adverse weather conditions.

Limited Engine Choices: The new HS Petrol is only available with one engine option, which might be a drawback for buyers looking for more variety in powertrains.

The new MG HS Petrol represents another step forward for MG in its journey of reinvention. Arriving just over a year after its last facelift and coinciding with MG's centenary, this latest HS brings together style, technology, comfort, and practicality at a price point that offers great value for money.

With its combination of modern design, a well-equipped interior, and a good balance of performance and efficiency, the HS Petrol stands out as a strong contender in the competitive SUV market. It continues to be MG's biggest seller in the UK, and with good reason—it offers a lot for its price, making it an attractive option for families, young professionals, and anyone looking for an affordable, stylish SUV.

If you're in the market for a new SUV that won't break the bank but still offers plenty of features, space, and a comfortable driving experience, the MG HS Petrol is definitely worth a test drive.
