This is the MG HS PHEV – during Part One of our road trip, it proved to be an outstanding companion, offering the perfect
blend of performance, practicality, and eco-conscious driving. As we continue onwards during this second part, the HS continues to impress.
So, part two of our road trip kicked off in style—and by style, we mean behind the wheel of the MG HS PHEV. After clocking a good few miles and getting properly acquainted with this plug-in hybrid SUV, we’ve got thoughts. Good ones. This car didn’t just turn heads; it genuinely impressed us with how smart, comfortable, and tech-savvy it is. And yes, it’s still budget-friendly—bonus.
Now, MG might not be the first badge that comes to mind when you think high-tech SUV, but hear us out. The HS PHEV is absolutely loaded with clever kit. It's the kind of car that quietly does the heavy lifting on a long journey, leaving you to enjoy the drive (and the playlist).
MG Pilot: Your Co-Pilot for the Open Road
Let’s talk about the MG Pilot system because it made a big difference on the road. It’s a full suite of driver aids that are standard across the HS PHEV range—which is refreshing because no one wants to fork out extra for basic safety these days.
Adaptive Cruise Control – Honestly a game-changer for motorway driving. Set your speed, and the car keeps a safe distance from the one in front. If they slow down, so do you. Effortless.
Lane-Keep Assist – Very handy on those endless dual carriageways or twisty A-roads. The system gently nudges you back into line if you start drifting. Subtle, but solid backup.
Traffic Jam Assist – We hit a few slow-moving sections (cheers, roadworks), and this feature took the edge off. It controls stop-start traffic with grace, handling both the brakes and throttle. Chill mode: activated.
Automatic Emergency Braking – Didn't need it (thankfully!), but knowing it’s watching out for you in city traffic adds a layer of reassurance.
Throw in Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and suddenly those chaotic supermarket car parks don’t feel quite so daunting. And if you’re in the Trophy trim, you’ll also get front parking sensors—which we genuinely appreciated when navigating tight B&B driveways.
Road Trip-Ready Practicality
As a road trip companion, the HS PHEV ticked all the boxes. The boot swallowed our gear no problem (including some very optimistic picnic equipment), and the cabin stayed impressively quiet even at higher speeds. Everyone had space to stretch out, charge their devices, and chill.
Fuel stops were few and far between, thanks to that efficient hybrid system—and when we did need a top-up, the charging process was simple enough to do while grabbing a coffee.
This car brings the goods: comfy seating, big infotainment screen, and enough tech to make you feel like you’re driving something twice the price. And all without the range anxiety of a full EV.
From Motorways to Scenic Routes
We went from the fast lane to coastal lanes, and the HS handled it all like a champ. It’s not trying to be a performance SUV, but it’s got enough zip when you need it, and the electric motor gives you that silent, smooth torque when pulling away.
Whether you’re navigating city streets or stretching your legs on the motorway, the HS PHEV feels right at home. It’s easy to drive, relaxing when it needs to be, and packed with safety features that mean you can just focus on the journey—not worrying about what’s around the next bend.
Final Thoughts
The MG HS PHEV proved to be more than just a way to get from A to B. It became part of the road trip experience—techy without being overwhelming, practical without being dull, and stylish enough that it made us smile every time we jumped back in.
So, would we take it on another adventure? Absolutely. It’s the kind of car that makes you wonder why you’d ever spend more when this gets so much right.
