This is the Omoda 5 and e5!
As the automotive world rapidly shifts towards electric mobility, car manufacturers are working hard to provide consumers with choices that fit their lifestyle and driving needs. Enter Omoda, a brand that has recently launched its two headline models in the UK, the Omoda 5 and the Omoda e5. Both vehicles represent the cutting edge of automotive technology, blending futuristic design with impressive features, but they cater to two very different types of drivers.

We had the opportunity to test both models at Omoda’s first leg of their 5 cities drive event. Whether you're looking to stick with the familiar comforts of internal combustion or are ready to embrace electric mobility, Omoda has something for you.

The 5 - Design and Exterior
At first glance, the 5 makes a bold statement. Its exterior design is sleek and modern, borrowing from Omoda’s “Art in Motion” philosophy, which blends sharp lines and smooth curves for a visually arresting silhouette. The diamond-pattern grille adds a touch of elegance to the aggressive front end, and the LED headlights give it a futuristic yet practical edge. Omoda has made sure that the 5 is not just about looks, though; its aerodynamic design helps improve fuel efficiency and overall performance.

The petrol-powered SUV rides on 19-inch alloy wheels (depending on trim), and the aerodynamic lines across the body add a sporty edge. In terms of dimensions, it’s compact enough for city driving but offers the space and comfort of a mid-size SUV.

Engine and Performance
Under the bonnet lies a 1.6L, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 183 BHP and 270 Nm of torque. This front-wheel-drive SUV offers a smooth ride with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), ensuring quick and seamless gear changes. Accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 7.9 seconds, the 5 feels lively on the road, especially during overtakes or when merging onto the motorway.

Fuel efficiency hovers around 30mpg, though eco-conscious drivers may squeeze a bit more out of it during long-distance, steady-speed drives. It’s not the most frugal SUV in its segment, but it offers a good balance between power and efficiency. Unfortunately, there’s no all wheel drive option for those who might need a bit more grip for rugged or off-road conditions.

The driving dynamics are impressive, offering light, precise steering and a suspension setup that strikes a balance between comfort and handling. It’s not a sports SUV, but it provides a reassuringly stable and smooth ride, whether you're navigating city streets or tackling longer motorway journeys.

Interior and Technology
Stepping inside the Omoda 5 reveals a cabin that feels both premium and tech-forward. The dashboard is dominated by a 10.25-inch dual display, which houses the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, the system is highly responsive, and navigating through menus feels fluid and intuitive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, ensuring seamless smartphone integration.

One of the standout features in the Omoda 5 is the dual wireless charging pads, which have their own cooling system—a clever touch that prevents your devices from overheating during longer drives. In terms of audio, the Omoda 5 comes equipped with a Sony 8-speaker sound system, delivering crisp sound quality.

The Noble trim ups the ante with additional features like a panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, and a 360° camera for easier parking and manoeuvring in tight spots.

This is a spacious SUV, boasting 507 litres of boot space, which expands significantly when the rear seats are folded down. Rear passengers are treated to ample legroom and headroom, making it a great choice for families or those who often travel with passengers.

Pricing and Value
There are two trims to choose from: Comfort and Noble. Prices start at £25,235 for the Comfort trim, while the fully loaded Noble trim is priced at £27,035. When you consider the features, styling, and technology on offer, the Omoda 5 represents excellent value for money in the petrol SUV segment.

The e5 - Design and Exterior
The e5 shares many of the design cues seen on the 5, but with subtle differences that reflect its electric nature. The closed-off grille is the first giveaway that this is an EV, and it gives the front fascia a more streamlined, futuristic look. LED lighting elements throughout the exterior add a sci-fi touch, while the flowing lines and lack of exhaust pipes make it look effortlessly modern.

Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, it has an aerodynamic design that not only looks good but also aids in reducing drag, improving the vehicle’s overall efficiency.

Powertrain and Performance
Beneath its sleek exterior, the e5 is powered by a 130kW electric motor, which delivers instant torque and propels the SUV from 0-62mph in under 7 seconds. This makes it quicker off the line than its petrol counterpart. The electric motor provides 310 Nm of torque, and the 265-mile range (WLTP) ensures that it’s practical for both city commutes and longer trips.

Charging is a breeze with fast-charging capabilities, allowing you to charge from 20% to 80% in just under 30 minutes at a DC fast-charging station. For home charging, you’ve got AC charging up to 11 kW, making it convenient to top up overnight.

Driving this electric SUV is a refined experience. The instant power delivery and silent operation make for a serene ride, especially in city traffic. The lack of engine noise and vibration also enhances the cabin's premium feel.

Interior and Technology
The e5 shares much of its interior with the 5, but with a few key upgrades that reflect its more futuristic aspirations. Like the petrol model, the e5 features a dual 10.25-inch display for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, but here, the interface is more touch-focused, giving the cabin a cleaner, more minimalist look.

One of the standout features of the e5 is its over-the-air software update capability, ensuring that the SUV remains up to date with the latest software enhancements and features. This future-proofing is a big advantage, especially as technology continues to evolve.

The Sony 8-speaker sound system is carried over from the 5, ensuring high-quality audio on the move, while features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and collision avoidance come standard. The flat rear floor—thanks to the battery placement—provides additional legroom for rear passengers, making the e5 an even more comfortable option for long-distance driving.

Practicality and Charging
In terms of practicality, the e5 offers ample space for both passengers and cargo. While the boot space is slightly smaller than the 5 due to the battery layout, it still provides more than enough room for day-to-day use, with plenty of additional storage spaces throughout the cabin.

Charging infrastructure is critical for EV owners, and Omoda has equipped the e5 with fast-charging capability that allows it to recharge quickly at DC fast-charging stations. For home charging, the 11 kW AC charging system ensures that you can easily top up overnight, ready for the next day's driving.

Both the Omoda 5 and Omoda e5 come with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems designed to make driving safer and more enjoyable:
The petrol-powered Omoda 5 comes equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, collision avoidance, and a 360-degree camera. These features make it a safe choice for both city and motorway driving, giving drivers extra confidence on the road.
The electric Omoda e5 builds on the Omoda 5’s safety features with even more advanced tech, including intelligent adaptive cruise control and active park assist. These systems not only enhance safety but also reduce driver fatigue, making long journeys more comfortable and stress-free.

Petrol or Electric?
Ultimately, choosing between the 5 and the e5 comes down to your personal preferences and whether you're ready to embrace the future of electric mobility.
If you prefer the familiar feel of a petrol engine and want a stylish, tech-packed SUV, the 5 is an excellent choice. It offers strong performance, a spacious interior, and excellent value for money.
If you're ready to make the switch to electric, the e5 delivers all the benefits of an EV, including silent operation, instant torque, and lower running costs, while still offering a premium driving experience.

With pricing starting at £25,235 for the 5 and £30,495 for the e5, both models represent great value in their respective segments. Whether you're sticking with petrol or going electric, Omoda has crafted two compelling options that are sure to make a splash in the UK market.
