All new Alpine

The all new Alpine sports car, an all new rear wheel drive two-seater which should be on the market by 2016. Alpine are working alongside Caterham to make an original design from the ground up, although the earlier model being based on a Lotus.

The suspension specialist Ohins have been seen testing the car at the Nurburgring, Germany, this company are more commonly known for working on the Renault sport models, despite Renault not confirming the vehicle to be the Alpine, inside sources have confirmed it is.

The new Alpine is said to have a steel space frame chassis that features weight-saving aluminium and composite components. It also has independent suspension, the engine is expected to be a turbocharged 2.0-litre unit with around 280bhp, however if you fancy something a little less, there is a tuned version of the Renault sport Clio 200 Turbo’s 1.6-litre engine on the cards.

The new alpine has been set out to rival the Porsche Cayman and is being benchmarked against its rival. However Caterham's new car will have the same basic architecture, the same chassis and running gear. However they will be put against the Alfa Romeo 4C.

The car still does not have a name, but will be styled from the A110 alpine with a modern influence to emphasis the its unique styling. Laurens van den Acker (Renault design chief) has said that the car will have a completely different look.

It is clear that although the Caterham and Alpine are built on the same architecture they will be very different from each other. It will be interesting to see how these cars look and what cahnges will be applied to which versions. The real question is which one will come out on top, if there is a top or more of a challenge will they beat their rivals.
